Jeremiah Cohick (’07), Arthur Nicholls (’06) and Mark Fish (’07) formed Digital Dandelion, Inc. early this year to create web applications for Facebook and mobile phones. Competing against over 600 teams, Digital Dandelion was awarded a $25,000 grant to develop Bottle Rocket, a wine rating application.

Bottle Rocket helps users pick the perfect bottle of wine. Wine enthusiasts of all levels will be able to rate wines through the Facebook and iPhone applications. Bottle Rocket then analyzes the wines users have liked with ratings from their friends to make informed recommendations. As users rate wines the recommendations become smarter.

From now through November 30th, Facebook Platform users will have the chance to try Bottle Rocket and the other winners of round one, Users will be able to test the applications, watch demonstration videos and vote for their favorites. The online voting site can be found at http://apps.facebook.com/fbfundvote/contests/109/entries/3358 Final judging of round two will factor in user voting, as well as input from Facebook, Accel Partners and Founders Fund. Once round two closes in December, Facebook will announce five winners who will receive up to $225,000 in non-recourse grants.

fbFund recipients represent a diverse array of start-ups innovating in areas ranging from e-commerce, religion and productivity to gaming, education, weddings, wine, sports and travel. Other founders include former CEOs and seasoned entrepreneurs, as well as a supercomputer engineer and a kiteboarder who develops in Python.

fbFund was founded in 2007 as a $10 Million seed fund focused on identifying talent and enabling entrepreneurs to build innovative and meaningful applications on Facebook Platform or on any third party website, desktop application or device with Facebook Connect. Round one of the fbFund competition was announced in late July at Facebook’s annual f8 developer conference and, in less than a month, more than 600 applications were received. An investment committee comprised of members from Facebook, Accel Partners and Founders Fund carefully reviewed each submission.

I just love the adrenaline rush I get from riding one. In my experience there are no bad roller coaster rides, some are just better than others. Some would say am a traditionalist. I don’t need to be suspended, flow in a loop or whipped around to have a great time. I used to prefer the old wooden roller coasters, but the new metal ones are my favorites now. They have smoothness and speed that the older wooden coaster can’t match. Of my top five roller coasters, only one is wooden. I think I like the old things when they are improved by new younger ideas.

When I find a coaster I like, I’m just fine riding it all day. I once rode Superman, at Six Flags New England, 11 times in one day. Each time was good. I love the ups and downs, the moments of fear and anticipation. I don’t even mind the waiting in line, because it gives some time to stop, talk and think. It is all so much fun. I always feel younger after a day of that.

The last few weeks of my life have been quite a roller coaster ride too. So much has happened since October first. I’ve changed jobs, to help start Digital Dandelion; we applied for and received a $25K grant from the Facebook fbFund8; there were plans and parties for Arthur and Jeremiah’s wedding; the wedding itself; post wedding events; the election; the second round of applications for fbFund8; and last night a march protesting the Gay Marriage ban. Phew. In the midst of all of this, I got extremely emotional and probably caused some pain for the people that care for me the most, but I guess that is part of the ride too. It does seem like at the moment, things are slowing down. It is nice to have some time to stop, talk and think. I imagine a lot of good will come out of this pause.

I hope it doesn’t last too long though, I’m ready for another ride.

I have been writing, I just haven’t been putting it here. My hesitancy to start again comes from my uncertainty of where this should go. How public should my life be? Should it be about my work only? Should it be a slightly manufactured internet persona? Should it be personal? Should it be extremely personal?

Is the revival a miracle or just a fleeting magic trick? Time will tell.

(Link) At first this really upset me, but the more I pondered it, the less it bothered me. Why? He can’t seem to win the war in Iraq, so how can he win this one?

I do think it is interesting to hear about morality from a man that doesn’t understand how to take care of his own troops. It would be more cogent for him to discuss the situation at Walter Reed Hospital and the other medical facilities that take care of our veterans. Of course his miserable failure to successfully prosecute the war and his dreadful neglect of the heroes returning from overseas is why he made the remarks on Monday.
